WORLD: FORECAST FOR COATINGS MARKET

Article Abstract:

A study by The Freedonia Group predicts the worldwide demand for paints and varnishes to grow at an annual rate of 2.8% in the 1998-2003 period, compared with 2.7% per year in 1993-98. Demand would thus rise to 25.84mn tonnes in 2003. In value terms, annual growth is estimated at 4.6%, with demand rising to US$ 80bn by 2003. The steepest growth rate, at 4.6% per year, is expected in Asia and Oceania, with sales in 2003 likely to reach 5.845mn tonnes. Demand in western Europe and North America is forecast to grow 2.1% annually to 6.45mn tonnes and 6.445mn tonnes, respectively. Sales in Japan are expected to grow 1.3% annually to 2.24mn tonnes. Demand in other regions is predicted to increase 3.1% per year to 4.86mn tonnes in 2003.
