Oxocarbons and pseudooxocarbons

Article Abstract:

The developments in the chemistry of oxocarbons and pseudooxocarbons are reviewed. This class of compounds, marked by symmetric pi-systems delocalized by heteroatoms, is intermediate between inorganic molecules with cross conjugation and benzenoid-type conjugated carbocycles. The study discusses the progress in synthetic methodology and the emerging field of applications of oxocarbon derivatives. Most notable are the squaric acids which now find use in biopolymers, antihistamines, antibiotics, contact allergens and photoconductors.

Progress in the construction of cyclooctanoid systems: new approaches and applications to natural product syntheses

Article Abstract:

The emergence of synthetic methodologies such as ring closure metathesis, radical cyclizations and higher order inter- and intra-molecular cyclizations have addressed the problems of cyclooctanoid- and other medium ring construction. Thus, the notion that cyclooctane rings are elusive and recalcitrant have been dispelled. In addition, the discovery of new reagents has brought forth efficacious applications in the synthesis of cyclooctanoids.

Small carbon clusters: spectroscopy, structure, and energetics

Article Abstract:

There has been intense activity in carbon cluster research since Weltner and Van Zee released their extensive review in 1989. An upgrade is offered with a new review of experiments conducted since the publication of that original exposition. This review focuses on the structural, spectroscopic and energetic features of pure sp carbon clusters and their ions in the C(sub 2) to about C(sub 30) size range.
