Are LANs Ready to Blossom?

Article Abstract:

The use of local area networks is expected to increase by the end of this decade. In a panel discussion sponsored by Modern Office Procedures, industry experts discussed the issues and problems surrounding networks. They believe that there is a great deal of confusion surrounding the definition of local area networks as well as their capabilities. They also feel that cost will determine how rapidly businesses will purchase networks, both in the initial purchase price and in the benefits of the system. One of the problems is that the cost of the necessary computer equipment is still high, and an effective network may need to be large and one where a substantial amount of paper is produced. A major stumbling block is the lack of compatibility and common data structures. They describe networks as a revolution in business that will affect office structure, and they advise users to study their needs and security requirements carefully before making purchases.

Computer Coming? Here's How To Get Ready

Article Abstract:

Installing a new computer system requires both extensive long range planning and effective project management. Adequate space, electrical voltage requirements, air conditioning, furniture, and telephone lines must all be considered before any hardware is brought in. One project manager should be appointed to oversee the installation and testing, and training should begin immediately.
