Computer Disasters - Ignorance and Complacency

Article Abstract:

Many businesses rely totally on computer systems to run their businesses on a daily basis. The effects of computer failure are always present, but this is often ignored. A recent survey found that most managers have done little to plan for computer failures. Fires and accidental damage are more likely to affect computer installations than spectacular events like terrorism. On the average, companies can survive for only ten and a half days in the event of a disaster. Preventive measures include: mutual back-up arrangements, internal back-up arrangements and contingency services.

BP Chemicals has acquired an audio video instruction system for the training of its operation crew at its production plant. The CAVIS computer system is interactive and is proving to be far more effective than books. Employees can pace themselves and be tested by the system during company hours as they find the time. Safety techniques are keys to the training application of the system.
