Computers: A Restructured Industry

Article Abstract:

The 1984 Summer Consumer Electronics Show (SCES) is the occasion for this industry analysis. The PC and home computer market appears to have shaken down to three distinct arenas: the under $500 market dominated by Atari and Commodore, the $500-$1700 market where Apple is the force to be reckoned with, and the over $1700 range represented best by the IBM PC. All three arenas are well represented at the 1984 SCES. Portable and so-called lap computers will offer the next battleground. In 1984 software factory sales to dealers are expected to be as high as $2.2 billion. Consumers can expect to see software prices come down as hardware prices drop. Overall the industry's outlook is bright. The only trouble spot is in the under $500 market, where consumer interest and dealer profits are waning.

P.O.P. Provides Low-Cost, High Profile Impact

Article Abstract:

A study was done by the Point of Purchase Advertising Institute of one hundred twelve retailers. The purpose was to determine the effectiveness of in-store displays. Most retailers agreed on the importance of displays. The two most important factors in determing displays was not to create a cluttered look, and to have sufficient seasonal merchandise. The trend is toward greater use of displays among retailers.
