Article Abstract:

Alan Hoffberg recounts a problem concerning his company's payment of a $10000 bill to Sears. Mr. Hoffman was subsequently billed again with an additional service charge. Investigation revealed that the system for transferring credit for payment from the local to the regional office was not equipped to handle numbers over 9999.99. Similar accounting systems should have controls throughout processing and transmission.
