Fiber Optics Will Speed Messages

Article Abstract:

C & P Telephone (Washington,D.C.) is installing over 5,800 miles of fiber optic cable that will allow high speed data, voice, and video transmissions to be sent simultaneously in the Washington, D.C. area. The cable is manufactured by Siecor (Hickory, North Carolina) and will be installed at thirty C & P switching stations. Fiber optic cable is not vulnerable to electromagnetic interference as is copper cable.

Electronic Mail Gets the Nod

Article Abstract:

James Coyne, Congressman from Pennsylvania, has established an electronic mail system between his constituents and his Washington, DC, office. The system works by using a local Philadelphia telephone number to connect Coyne's terminal with the constituents' personal or other computers. The electronic mail system is a product of CompuServe.

Air Force Creating Electronic System

The military is using office automation to save time and money on publications systems. The Air Force is working on an electronic publication system, expected to be completely operational by 1990. It features text processing, electronic transfer, and local reproduction.
