GeoPort: show time on the shadow network

Article Abstract:

Most PCs are unable to keep up with the new fast 28.8 Kbps modems or with high-speed multimedia transmissions sent through FDDI and other fast network architectures. Apple Computer's GeoPort, a combination of a modified serial port and software, may overcome these limitations and allow AV Macintoshes and Power Macs to send and receive high-speed data. THe $130 GeoPort Telecom Adapter Kit uses the GeoPort analog telephone interface and Apple's Telecom 2.0 telephony software. The kit incorporates functionality of a duplex speakerphone, a fax machine with OCR and a 14.4 Kbps modem that is upgradable to 28.8 Kbps. Apple has generated much interest because of the increasing demand for high-speed networking. Support for GeoPort is being added to DSP chips, audio codecs and PBX phone systems.

Final Cut Pro

Article Abstract:

Apple's $999 Final Cut Pro should set the standard for video editing on the Macintosh. The product's variety of motion paths, filters, keying, rotation and effects are impressive and the interface for working with multiple effects is excellent. The product's FXBuilder feature for creating customized effects requires expertise and patience. Final Cut supports Pinnacle's Targa 1000 and 2000 M-JPEG devices for analog editing. The program does not offer real-time editing and the time required to render transitions, titles and graphics will limit its usefulness for professionals. The product will be valued by digital video camcorder owners and video specialists working in small studios.
