HIT solar cells convert more energy, remain efficient when hot

Article Abstract:

Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd. has developed what it claims to be a solar production cell offering the world's highest conversion efficiency. The heterojunction with intrinsic thin layer (HIT) solar cell converts 17.3% of the solar energy it collects into electric energy. The cell, which is designed for both residential and commercial applications, consists of a thin single-crystal silicon wafer surrounded by layers of extremely thin amorphous silicon. This design reduces energy loss, leading to high energy efficiency. Modules using the HIT cells provide an efficiency of 15.2% and up to 180W output.
