Assessment of legume and nonlegume ground covers on Coleoptera: Coccinellidae density for low-input pecan management

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the legume cover crop treatment used in three pecan orchards to determine its effectiveness in reducing pecan aphids. Results show that legume cover crop treatment increase the number of coccinellids that led to the decline in pecan aphids. Coccinellid density was greater in legume ground covers than in the tree canopy, suggesting that many coccinellid species on the legumes are reluctant to migrate to the trees when there are few or no legume aphids.
