Industry Turns to ETRs, Auxiliary Products to Strengthen Aftermarket

Article Abstract:

The trend towards OEM autosound installations is expected to increase in 1985. Aftermarket suppliers and retailers will respond to the threat by emphasing digital systems such as compact disc (CD) players and by expanding their product lines into security and mobile communications. About 30,000 to 50,000 auto CDs will be sold in 1985, which will increase the car speaker market to keep up with the latest technology in sound reproduction. The security systems market is expected to grow as retailers find consumers investing in more expensive auto stereo equipment and willing to pay top dollar to protect their investment. Sales of radar detectors increased by twenty percent in 1984 and are expected to continue strong through 1985. The cellular phone market is expected to take-off once the prices fall to $1,000, which could happen as soon as late 1985.
