Portable powerhouses

Article Abstract:

Eight manufacturer's Pentium-based notebooks and one PowerPC-based notebook are evaluated for their overall value, performance, display quality, expandability, video playback, audio quality, battery life and design and ergonomics. The IBM ThinkPad 770 and Dell Inspiron 3000 were given the highest ratings of the notebooks tested. The ThinkPad was rated highly for its high-quality 14.1-inch screen, DVD drive with hardware MPEG 2 decoder and first rate sound. The notebook is not inexpensive at $5,199, but is far cheaper than its previous price, in the range of $7,000. The Dell Inspiron 3000 m266xt is ranked high for its incredibly low price of $2,599. The Inspiron also comes equipped with 32MB of RAM, a high-capacity 5MB hard drive and a 24X CD-ROM drive. The Apple Macintosh PowerBook G3 was ranked just beneath the IBM and Dell systems. Sporting a 250MHz PowerPC 750 chip, its performance was equal or better than the 266MHz Pentium systems. The system was flawed by an inadequate display.

Pentium II and G3 hit the road

Article Abstract:

Apple's new $1,999 PowerBook G3 PowerPC-based notebook not only costs substantially less than the IBM ThinkPad 770E, it is much faster as well. During tests, the Photoshop battery of tests ran 25% to 35% faster on a 250MHz PowerBook G3 than on an IBM ThinkPad 770E, which costs almost $7,000. However, the 770E is almost twice as fast as its predecessor, 770, and offers a rich set of features, including 64MB of RAM, a DVD drive with hardware MPEG 2 support, and a 8.1GB hard drive. The completely redesigned new PowerBook G3 should eventually replace PowerBook 1400, 2400, 3400 and earlier G3s.
