Screens of desire

Article Abstract:

Graphics and new media developers need larger monitors with quick refresh rates, high resolution, ample display areas and crisp, bright colors. A buyers guide surveys the 20-inch and 21-inch offerings of 22 color monitor vendors. Prices range from around $13,00 to $2,000. All of the monitors support a minimum of 1,600 by 1,200 pixels at 75Hz, some have even higher resolutions. All but a few of them work with both the Macintosh and PCs, although most of them require an adapter for use with the Mac. This buyers guide covers specialist vendors only; most computer vendors also offer monitors of this size. These monitors employ either flat-square shadow mask or cylindrical aperture grille CRTs, which are essential for graphics applications.

Digitizing images

Article Abstract:

Quality color flatbed scanners that scan images in 30- and 36-bit colors and capture resolutions of at least 600dpi range in price from a few hundred dollars to a couple of thousand dollars. The scanner's platen area should be able to handle 8.5-by-14-inch documents, in case documents need to be digitized. HP's scanners have the unusual ability to scan 3D objects. Transparency adapters, for scanning in slides and transparencies, are a useful bundled feature that would cost from $499 to $699 to buy separately. OCR programs and other bundled software can add greatly to a scanner's value.
