Time Off Work for Public Duties

Article Abstract:

Traditionally, individuals who played a large role in public life came from the so-called leisure class. This remains true in the 1980s. However, these people tend not to represent the concerns of the larger community. In the United Kingdom laws exist which allow the ordinary corporate employee to take time off, usually without pay, for participation in public activities. Everyone can benefit, including the company whose public image may be enhanced by a clear willingness to permit employees the freedom to work for the social good.

Ill Health at Work

Article Abstract:

Many employees are known for absenteeism for reasons other than ill health. One way to discourage this is to require a doctor's certificate. Most short absences will not require a check-up for the certificate, so this is not a surefire method. Longer absences do usually require a check-up and certificate. Keeping a close monitor on absences and discussing it with the employee will prevent continuous absences down the road, and iron out problems before a serious step has to be taken.

Incompetence at Work

Article Abstract:

Many managers have a problem with firing long-term employees who are not competent. Technological changes and the pressures of the business environment demand action concerning incompetence at work. A procedure needs to be developed whereby action can be taken against these employees. Warnings need to be given to employees and the situation monitored to judge performance improvements, if any. In addition, standards need to be set and employees judged against these standards.
