White Paper: the Personal Computer Grows Up

Article Abstract:

Off-the-shelf packages, technological advances and lower costs have caused the proliferation of personal computers (PCs) in the office. PCs can be desktop or portable with fixed or custom configurations. The effectiveness of management applications are harder to measure than office productivity. Word processors and telecommunications are taking on some of the PC's characteristics and the PC industry is replying with technology such as graphics, touch-sensitive screens and the very important networks. Optimum networks will depend on management using standardized software and hardware. Good training, vendor support and properly designed data bases are imperative. Security and obsolescence are solvable problems. PCs for larger operations will evolve into multifunction workstations.
