A multimillion dollar bet on low-tech

Article Abstract:

MariTEL, based in New York, NY, is promoting ship-to-ship, ship-to-shore and shore-to-ship services through acquisitions of marine operators nationwide. As the US largest provider of marine VHF telecommunications services, the company owns 200 channels, or more than 90% of the VHF channel licenses in the country. MariTEL offers its services through a uniform national VHF telecommunications system, a new semi-automated hauling procedure, upgraded land stations and a measure of privacy.
