ACGIH study fuels NRCA concerns over asphalt fumes

Article Abstract:

The National Roofing Contractors Association (NCRA) is concerned about the recent ruling by the American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists to alter its threshold limited value (TLV) for asphalt fumes. The change scrapped the former TLV of 5.0 milligrams per cubic meter of 'total particulate' to 0.5 milligrams per cubic meter of benzene soluble fraction of 'inhalable' particulate. NCRA officials said the decision could prompt regulatory bodies to follow.

Asphalt roofing systems stay on top

Article Abstract:

Roofing contractors have continued to use asphalt-based roofing systems for the majority of their commercial and residential roofing jobs despite the emergence of new roofing systems in the market. The increased use of cold-applied systems has driven the market share of asphalt-based roofing, with nearly two-thirds of roofing contractors reporting the use of ambient-applied modified bitumen systems. The advantages of three-ply cold asphalt-based systems and two-ply modified bitumen in cold adhesive are many.
