AOL to pay $5,000 in CA telemarketing case

Article Abstract:

A California court has ordered America Online (AOL) to pay a state resident $5,026 in damages for violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). Gerry Standefer of Mentone, CA, said AOL called him repeatedly at home asking if he would like to have his name included in AOL's do-not- call list. He added that he also received several calls per week from AOL for 90 days of free Internet access. The TCPA requires that companies maintain databases of persons who request not to be called and eliminate their phone numbers from their telemarketing lists.

MN Public Radio agrees to change its list policy

Article Abstract:

Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) has settled its lawsuit filed by the state's attorney general's office over MPR's list-sharing practices. The settlement requires MPR to modify its list-sharing policy but will not pay additional fees or damages. MPR would change the term 'occasionally' to 'regularly' in describing how frequent it shares its list of donors with other parties. However, MPR criticized Attorney-General Mike Hatch saying the lawsuit should not have happened had Hatch disclosed his concerns beforehand.
