ASTM D6083 made easy

Article Abstract:

ASTM D6083-97a is a standard specification for liquid-applied white elastomeric roof coatings that has been on the industry code books since roughly 1998. This specification incorporates 14 standard ASTM test methods that offer useful benchmarks for elastomeric coating performance. The ASTM tests cover elongation and viscosity measurements, flow and consistency of the finished coating, weight percent solids, tensile strength, permeance, water swelling, adhesion, fungi and tear resistance, as well as film properties after 1,000 hours of accelerated weathering.

Standard bearers: ASTM issues guidelines for modifieds

Article Abstract:

The West Conshohocken, PA-based American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has published seven modified bitumen standards since roughly 1996 and is developing a number of other specifications relating to the product. These standards call for package labels to include information such as net coverage, minimum coating thickness and granule adhesion. Yet an industry observer noted that many professionals still cite Canadian standards for modified bitumens in their US specifications, even on US government building projects.

How coatings meet VOC limits

Article Abstract:

The latest federal and state regulations restricting the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) used in roof coatings appear to continue to allow for the excellent performance of roof coatings. For instance, it had been feared that the new VOC regulations would reduce VOC levels in roof coatings, such that these would not meet the viscosity requirements of ASTM standards frequently used to specify industry products. This has not happened, however.
