At loggerheads

Article Abstract:

Sustainable timber sources have become a hot political issue in many countries. In the UK, timber trades, such as door and wondow makers, and the green lobby are disputing the definition of sustainable timber. A partial solution to the problem has been the announcement by Friends of the Earth's Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) that four companies have been given approval to certify sustainable forests. However, the timber traders' organisation Forests Forever disputes FSC's definitions of sustainability and says it is unrealistic. Experts say that there should be a single scheme.

Democratic renewal

Article Abstract:

St Andrew's House, Edinburgh, Scotland, is to be the official base of civil servants in the new Scottish Executive, formerly the Scottish Office. St Andrew's House was chosen due to its location close to the Scottish Parliament but the house, which was built between the wars, had been neglected for 30 years. Some 20 million pounds sterling is being spent on the work to change old style offices into a modern open plan work area. The steel frame had to be supported by cathodic protection system. Architects Reiach and Hall had to work closely with the Historic Scotland society.

An open and shut case

Article Abstract:

Research into the effectiveness of natural ventilation systems in seven recently designed buildings has revealed a range of problems. Buildings where users open and close windows to provide ventilation is a popular concept with architects but problem areas discovered were in design, operation and system management. Two improvements would be to design buildings with less distance across from window to window if natural ventilation is going to be comfortable for all the occupants in a room and to educate building users in effective operation and control of the system.
