Banks back jobs purge

Article Abstract:

The recent wide-reaching job cuts at contracting firms have been welcomed by leading lending banks, which are encouraging a programme of rationalisation within the construction industry. Some 35,000 construction industry jobs were lost in the year to Jul 1995, while new orders fell by 10% in the three months to May 1995 from the year-earlier period. Bankers also welcome moves by leading companies to avoid unprofitable contracts at the expense of turnover.

Cut staff numbers further, top 20 told

Article Abstract:

The UK's leading contracting firms have reduced their costs considerably over recent years, but they could still cut costs even further by shedding staff, according to Peter Jenkins, divisional director of the property and construction team of Ernst and Young. On-site operations are now generally employing the minimum of staff, but jobs could still go in buying and estimating work. There is still scope to reduce costs at head office and regional level.
