Bedford prison

Article Abstract:

Bedford Prison's new extension consisting of entry, house and medical blocks was built at a cost of about 1,397 pounds sterling per squared metre of gross floor area. The prison is situated in the town centre and is an important architectural feature. The house block is compact and cells are designed for 2 inmates with en suite toilet facilities. All windows have security glass and doors are standard security with grilles and gates. The roof has been made secure with large eaves to prevent climbing and coated steel sheet coverings; there are rooflights.

Taunton Catholic centre

Article Abstract:

Taunton catholic centre in UK was completed at the beginning of 1992. The centre is built on a restricted site next to the catholic church and rectory. The existing hall and buildings had to be removed and special attention paid to the listed ancient town wall. Possible future expansion on the west side had to be catered for. The brick building is all ground floor. It includes function rooms, kitchen, disabled toilets, resources centre, shop and low-energy lighting. The centre cost over 574 pounds sterling per square metre gross floor area.

King's college centre, Aberdeen

Article Abstract:

The University of Aberdeen in Scotland set up a company called King's College Centre Ltd to manage a new conference centre in 1987. The Victorian library built in 1870 was converted into a conference room, multi-media theatre, reception area serving refreshments and university gift shop. The conversion was completed in Aug 1991 at a cost of under 2 million pounds sterling. The mezzanine floors were removed, library galleries replaced and shelves refitted for panelling. The wooden vaulted ceiling was restored and fire proofed.
