Births, deaths and marriages

Article Abstract:

Some UK housing associations' mergers have allowed the participants to keep their individual identities within a group structure. The Downland Housing Group consists of a number of subsidiary associations. It has assets of 254 million pounds sterling and a turnover of 31 million pounds sterling. The planned merger between Touchstone and Leicester will increase joint ownership of houses to about 18,000 units. The management hope the proposed merger between Riverside HA and Orbit will reduce technology costs. The new company would have an asset base of 989 million pounds sterling.

Public inquiry: Hanover

Article Abstract:

Hanover manages almost 15,000 homes for elderly people in the UK on 450 estates, and is among the largest 20 housing associations in the country. It has shown an innovative approach to addressing the housing needs of the elderly, and has most recently moved into extra-care housing. This allows elderly people to retain their independence without needing to live in residential care homes. It is also investing around 5 million pounds sterling a year in upgrading existing homes.

Knightstone

Article Abstract:

Knightstone, a housing association based in south-west England, plans to build 700 new homes in 1997, but expects public spending cuts to change the ways that it meets the need for affordable housing. Chief executive Sam Hood confirms the demand for cheap, high quality housing and is seeking new initiatives, such as using local labor to develop houses. Hood stresses that good relationships with local councils are the key to the association's success.
