Boom at the top

Article Abstract:

A study of UK construction industry executives' salaries for 1998, found a shortage of high quality employees had resulted in some house construction firms offering increases of 15% to recruit sufficient staff. The median pay for a chief executive of a firm, with a turnover of between 200 million-500 million pounds sterling, would be around 260,000 pounds sterling. Chief executives of firms with turnovers of some 101 million-300 million pounds sterling have had increases of 20% in their 1998 salaries. Many executives also had bonus payments, special pension plans and executive type cars.

Unsung heroes

Article Abstract:

The status, training and pay of construction site managers is not in accordance with their high level of responsibility. Site managers have no career progression and are subsequently often promoted to jobs at which they may be incompetent. The structure of contracting companies should be reorganised to allow site managers to progress a career along the lines of office-based middle management, as occurs in the US. Job responsibility in the US can be divided equally between a superintendent and project manager, with Mace, UK, construction manager, also using this two-tier structure.

20% of staff paid less than in 1991

Article Abstract:

A poll of almost 700 professionals in the UK construction industry indicates that 21% have seen a fall in their salary since 1991. Architects have been particularly badly affected, with more than one-third claiming to have suffered a fall in salary. There are also severe problems among companies with fewer than 100 employees, among employees aged over 45 and among those earning less than 50,000 pounds sterling a year.
