Brick awards 1996

Article Abstract:

The Burrell's Field development of student accommodation at Trinity College, Cambridge received the Supreme Brick Building of the Year Award at the 1996 UK Brick Awards. These are presented by the Brick Development Association. A description of the project together with the judges' comments is given for this and 7 other award winning entries. Winners include the Law Courts at Preston which took first place in the public and commercial section and the Brunei Gallery at the University of London which won the structural brickwork award.

A wee bit long in the tooth

Article Abstract:

Mowlem Scotland is working very hard to ensure that the 16 million pounds sterling Waterfront leisure centre in Greenock, Scotland, is completed by summer 1997. The building was originally scheduled for completion in Sep 1996, but its innovative design, especially the complex cladding, has been causing unforeseen difficulties. Facilities at the site will include a 25 mt, six-lane swimming pool, a lagoon pool, a curling rink and an ice skating rink.

Credibility gap

Article Abstract:

Local authorities are currently recladding social housing buildings. The intention is to solve functional problems and improve the appearance of buildings. Overcladding is available as in situ rendering or fixed rainscreen panels. Choice depends on several factors. Tight budgets have made cheaper render systems more popular.
