Building review: 88 Wood Street, London

Article Abstract:

One of the most impressive elements of the newly constructed 90 million pounds sterling Diawa Securities building is its cladding of low-iron glass which is impressively clear and allows all aspects of the building and its inhabitants to be viewed from the outside. The Lord Rogers' designed building took 11 years to reach completion mainly due to the economic depression of the Asian countries in the late 1990s. Glazing contractors have also suffered liquidation during the construction process.

Sound and vision

Article Abstract:

The refurbishment of a drill hall built in 1871 has lead to a mixture of styles, with the Victorian shell and orignal arches combined with mezzanine floors and galvanised steel staircases. The property in London W4 was purchased by independent record company Independinete. Twenty-eight offices with sound proofing were created in the internal space. A glass block gallery was included in the design to act as a meeting area for staff. The architects were Jestico and Whiles Ltd.

Two sides to every storey

Article Abstract:

Architects Haworth Tompkins conceded to local requests for contextual considerations in their design of an office block for the impressive Victorian seafront at Douglas, Isle of Man, UK. However, they refused to consider a replica Victorian building. The result is a bright, exuberant building which uses modern materials yet reflects the Italianate motifs in nearby buildings and also displays an ocean-liner influence. Materials in the facade include glass, anodized aluminium and white render, which echoes the white-painted stucco of adjacent buildings.
