Building revisited

Article Abstract:

A spectacular curved glass roof is the main feature of the Swanlea School in London, UK. The architect was commissioned to produce a school building which would work in harmony with the National Curriculum in 1993. Problems have occurred with general maintenance of the glazed mall, such as excessive cold during the winter and heat in the summer. Extra precautions have had to be fitted to prevent vandalism, while a total lack of storage space has lead to school equipment being stored under stairs and in costly storage facilities.

Quality patrol: unexpected visits from National House Building Council officers might make site managers feel as though they ar working in a police state. In reality, the check-ups are part of the NHBC's revamped quality award scheme

Article Abstract:

The National House Building Council (NHBC) has new powers as a statutory building control authority, and an inspector can arrive unannounced on a construction site. If a construction is faulty it will not receive a Buildmark certificate and prospective buyers will be unable to get a mortgage. The NHBC also operates a Pride in the Job scheme, which is another way of inducing quality of construction. An NHBC visit to a housebuilding site is described.
