Canada Post asks to raise lettermail rates

Article Abstract:

Canada Post Corp. of Ottawa, Canada, is proposing to increase the basic rate mail in Canada by one cent on Jan. 1, 1999, to 46 cents. The rate increase, which is still subject to approval by the federal government, will affect only lettermail, which is equivalent to the United State's First Class. Advertising mail and distribution services within Canada will remain unaffected. The postal service posted a net profit of $36 million on revenues of $5.1 billion during 1997-1998. However, Canada Post spokesman Jean-Marie Filion cited that the revenue decreased by $19 million over 1996-1997 and that the post had expected at least $100 million more in profits.

Canada Post' new stamp program, which allows photo images to be inserted into self-adhesive forms, has been received favorably by Canadian marketers. The program called Picture Postage requires small businesses to send to Canada Post the graphics they would like to use on personalized lettermail stamps. Canada Post returns the graphics in the form of miniature images on a sheet of adhesive paper. Alongside the logos, also on adhesive paper, are Canada Post stamps.
