Caught short

Article Abstract:

Construction industry subcontractors in the UK are calling for direct payment from clients to help stop disputes with main contractors holding up their funds. A study by the National Specialist Contractors Council found that 52% of companies questioned had an increased amount of work and 59% reported they would be recruiting additional staff during autumn 1997. Some industries are having a more difficult time, such as in the asphalt and stone industries which both report a lack of orders. The study found that 57% of those questioned were having a problem recruiting skilled workers.

Honest, highly skilled and cheerful

Article Abstract:

Workers in the UK construction industry were considered to be skillful, and hardworking in an important job. A study of the public perception of construction industry was carried out for the Building periodical. Some 1000 adults were questioned by telephone. The construction company Wimpey PLC was known by 95% of those questioned. The industry had been accused of being incompetent by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott but only one-third of the public, who were questioned, agreed with his view.
