Changing faces

Article Abstract:

Multi-storey car park building was a boom industry in the 60s which led to cheap, unaesthetic, open elevated buildings that did not blend in with the surroundings. Nineties multi-story car park designers are focusing on user-friendly qualities such as intricate design and landscaping which blend in with the existing architecture. The Hines Meadow multi-storey car park at Maidenhead, Berkshire, UK has been designed to create a civic land mark. It provides parking for 711 cars and complements the town's architecture. The car park uses a tiered affect, planter boxes and detailed brickwork.

Economy class

Article Abstract:

Management involved with the new 1,000-space car park being built at Heathrow Airport, England, at a cost of 3.8 million pounds sterling, are using innovatory techniques to reduce costs by up to 50%. The management of BAA initiated several new working practices including the use of a seven man team to oversee the whole project. The use of expert contactors and the introduction of drawings outlining the assembly of steel erectors for the erectors helped to cut costs and reduce construction time by two months.

Game set and match

Article Abstract:

The 55 million pounds sterling Centre Court shopping centre at Wimbledon, UK opened in Sep 1992. The specification detailed a light and bright 2-storey car park for 770 cars. Building commenced in May 1990. Prestressed concrete techniques were used as traditional concrete would have resulted in shrinkage movement. Prestressed concrete is: durable; does not crack; can take reduced loads of thinner concrete slabs reducing overall cost; has higher tensile capabilities and can be constructed faster.
