Highlights

Article Abstract:

UK architects Bruges Tozer Partnership were responsible for the design of the new administrative headquarters of the Avon and Somerset Constabulary, UK. The window design was one of the main features. Greater floor-to-ceiling height allowed vertical windows which had to be security-proof and provide ventilation and sufficient lighting. Windows at ground level have been restricted to a 150mm opening and internal blinds have provided solar shading. Security double glazing of up to 6.6mm toughened glass was used and tamper-proof glazing beads for ground floor windows.

Article Abstract:

Preservation of old buildings is difficult as factors such as fire resistance have to be studied. Modern clear, fire resistant glass can be incorporated into old buildings. The George Trew Dunn Partnership used traditional hard wood and leaded light infills for the windows of St Thomas' Hospital, London, UK. Mastic sealant was used to refurbish better worn windows as no ventilation was needed. Hand-made cathedral glass was chosen. The group used fluroscent lighting sets in boxes to light the stained glass windows of the Royal Marsden Hospital, London, UK.

Clearing the air

Article Abstract:

Willan Building Services has developed the Glidevale, a trickle vent for windows which opens automatically as humidity levels rise and closes automatically when humidity falls again. It requires no manual adjustment, and could therefore be particularly appropriate for use in social housing. The vent is quite expensive, but Willan believes that the price is justified by the fact that the vent is much more effective than ordinary mechanical or manual vents.
