Mailers prepare for stricter sweeps regs

Article Abstract:

The Deceptive Mail Prevention and Enforcement Act will impose new restrictions on sweepstakes mailers once it has been signed into law by Pres Clinton in Dec 2000. Sweepstakes mailers have taken the time to understand the language and implications of the new law which becomes effective on Apr 13, 2000. It provides restrictions on sweepstakes mailings, describes a name removal notification system, authorizes the US Postal Service's postmaster general to investigate fraud and establishes heavy financial penalties on violators.

DMers rally to sway changes in driver data bill

Article Abstract:

The direct marketing industry is lobbying Congress to change provisions attached to HR 2084 or the Senate Transportation Appropriations bill that would pave the way for amendments in the 1994 Driver Privacy Protection. The amendments would allow consumers to opt out of any disclosure of driver's license and motor vehicle data. Direct marketers argue that a list will not be worthwhile anymore if an opt-in measure is passed.
