Rooftop drama

Article Abstract:

The competition to design a new bus station in the centre of Walsall, England, was won in 1995 by architects Allford Hall Monaghan. But work was not started until 1998 when 6.5 million pounds sterling to fund the project had been found by Centro. It was due to be completed at the end of 1999 but will not now be opened until Apr 2000. The roof is made up of a concrete slap supported by steel trees. But once the roof props were removed there was concern the roof was sagging by 50mm although the various reports are not conclusive. Centro are also concerned about how long the roof will last.

The design and construction of the roof to the new Conservation Centre at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, Chichester, England, is presented. The unusual roof on the 1.05 million pounds sterling building is of a wooden 'gridshell' design.
