Article Abstract:

The new system for taxing gains and losses made on the trading of foreign exchange and financial instruments comes into effect on Mar. 23, 1995. The new taxes being levied are intended to fulfill two purposes: to treat foreign exchange movements on currency liabilities, assets and contracts as income items and to treat trading gains and losses on financial instruments likewise. The foreign exchange tax is applied on the currency liabilities, assets and contracts of qualified companies, a term which encompasses virtually all companies except charities, unit trusts and investment trusts. The financial instruments tax, on the other hand, is applied in a similar fashion, with charities and unit trusts being exempted, and investment trusts and insurance firms being covered by special rules.

Conventions on the cheap - with tax deductions

Article Abstract:

Participants to trade shows and conventions can write off expenses incurred as a result of attending said events through income tax deductions. Tax laws allow deductions for travel expenditures whenever reimbursements are not provided for by the employer. However, participation in conventions and shows held outside the US are not tax deductible. Employees should be prepared to present proof that the expenses were actually paid or incurred.
