Crest signals signs of recovery

Article Abstract:

UK housebuilder, developer and contractor Crest Nicholson has announced a 2 million pounds sterling profit for the year ending Oct 31 1992. The group was 59.4 million pounds sterling in debt in 1991. Chief executive John Callcutt cut operating costs by 27% by making 140 redundancies; 500 jobs have been lost since 1991. Calcutt sold the group's leisure activities which were making losses. He hopes to sell in between 1,500 to 1,700 homes in 1993. The company holds only 18 months worth of land stock.

Safety in numbers

Article Abstract:

The general union the GMB has begun a major recruitment drive to increase the number of its civil engineering and building members by targeting directly employed and self employed construction workers. The GMB is promoting its health and safety exepertise and its partnership aproach to industrial relations.
