Double bypass

Article Abstract:

Hodder Associates has recently been responsible for projects including the refurbishment of the Platt Lane doctors' surgery in Manchester, England, and the Edgerton Dunscar health centre in Bolton, England. In the first project, the surgery, situated in a small end-of-terrace Victorian house, saw changes to the location of the patients' entrance and the addition of a single-storey back extension. The second project involved the creation of an open-plan waiting area and the use of lighting and light-coloured surfaces to create a brighter atmosphere.

The rebirth of Cardiff Bay

Article Abstract:

Construction of the UK's largest sea barrage will be completed at Cardiff Bay, Wales by March 1999. The 191 million pounds sterling project has been built to reduce the impact of tidal flow into the bay which is being re-developed at a cost of 2.4 billion pounds sterling. Water flow will be controlled to make the bay into a freshwater lake which will be used for leisure and commercial activities. The barrage has been designed by architectural firm Alsop & Stormer and constructed by Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners.

Occupational hazards

Article Abstract:

There has been growing interest in the UK over recent years in the practice of assessing how a building performs in use. Such assessments can take into account technical, human, cost and architectural factors, and there is no standard approach. It is possible to make some measurements to obtain details about a building's technical performance, but other information must be obtained in other ways, such as a survey of the building's users.
