Double whammy: the landfill tax threatens to delay schemes in this year's social housing approved development programme and to reduce the number of homes built in the next

Article Abstract:

Social housing developers face a 50 million pounds bill due to the landfill tax, despite being amongst the keenest exponents of regeneration. Exemptions are offered by Customs & Excise on reclamation spoil taken from historically contaminated sites. However there are concerns that the need to seek exemption for contaminated sites will delay schemes, and how housing associations will bear additional costs when bidding for corporation grants on brownfield schemes.

Shun city. (ideal homes)

Article Abstract:

A survey of new home buyers found that most people aspire to live in a detached house, and one in five aspire to a bungalow. Location is important and the rural idyll continues to influence new home buyers, with just 14% aspiring to live in a city or large town. The majority of new home buyers move locally, with more retired people moving further afield.

Sticky summer ahead: building homes forecast

Article Abstract:

The housing market is expected to pick up towards the end of the year, and the pace of recovery has already accelerated. This has been helped by lower interest rates, and the release of TESSA money along with building society merger windfalls. The summer is expected to see a small slowdown due to prices rising faster than the increase in mortgage demand.
