European mailers push EC on issuance of postal directive

Article Abstract:

The European Commission is being pressured by Europe's postal users to issue a second directive regarding cross-border and direct mail because of different rules and regulations implemented by the different member states. The absence of a clear-cut directive from the European Union has led several member nations to buy courier and other delivery services while private carriers delivering mail have been formed in other countries.

Dutch-British postal alliance moves to block German dominance of postal markets

Article Abstract:

The Dutch, British and Singaporean post offices have formed a joint venture to offset Germany's thrust for global dominance in postal markets. Deutsche Post AG has been on a two-year buying spree in Europe and the US that has seen it acquire a network of logistics, transport and parcel delivery services firms. On the other hand, the joint venture would combine the network of Dutch-owned courier service TNT, with the mail volume of the Singapore Post and the UK Royal Mail.

EC fines Deutsche Post over rebates

Article Abstract:

Deutsche Post (DP) has been slapped with a 24-million-euro fine by the European Commission (EC) for granting 'fidelity' rebates to large mail- order customers. The EC said DP had abused its dominant position by by engaging in predatory pricing in its business parcel service. The EC added that the fine would be limited to rebates since the acts were committed from 1990 to 1995, when economic concepts were different and the costs incurred where difficult to determine.
