Eastern market stalls

Article Abstract:

UK architects, consulting engineers and construction contractors have managed to secure significant contracts as part of the ambitious programme to reconstruct Beirut, Lebanon. It is believed that the regeneration work could cost up to 38 billion pounds sterling over 25 years. However, the programme depends on foreign investment, and this is threatened by tensions with Israel. UK firms may also find it hard to win contracts, since local firms are fighting hard to retain the work, and some large projects are being divided into smaller ones that local firms can handle.

Dealing flaws

Article Abstract:

The Lloyd's building in London, England, which was designed by Richard Rogers Partnership and was completed in 1986, offers a great deal of flexibility. It has been able to cope with the influx of information technology in the insurance market and fluctuations in market conditions, and its underwriting hall functions well in practice. However, there are also a number of drawbacks associated with the unusual design of the building. The stark interiors have proved oppressive, and the external services have already ceased functioning properly.

Giant drum sets the stage for 2000

Article Abstract:

The 590 million pounds sterling Millennium Exhibition in Greenwich, London, England, will be based around an extremely large central drum. The main attraction within this structure, which will have a movable stage and seating, will be a multimedia production managed by Sir Cameron Mackintosh. Construction of the enclosing dome has already begun, but work on landscaping the external gardens and open-air arenas will not start until the end of 1997 at the earliest.
