Article Abstract:

The UK's Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) concludes that there are not enough brownfield sites to accommodate the projected need for 4.4 million extra households by 2016, even though property developers are complying with the government's policy of building half of their new homes on such sites. In particular, the TCPA suggests that all the brownfield sites in some popular areas of the UK will be developed by 2006. An analysis of the brownfield market is presented, plus details of Wimpey Homes' brownfield residential development near Middlesborough.

All that granny can buy

Article Abstract:

The Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust's Hartrigg Oaks retirement community near York, England, is made up of 96 two-bedroom and 56 one-bedroom bungalows. It has already been possible to market 50 of the homes, with 58 people now on the waiting list. The development offers a wide range of facilities, including a library, hair salon, shop and restaurant, and also has a nursing care centre for residents who can no longer care for themselves. The first residents will move in in Feb 1998, and it is likely that the entire site will be sold out by then.

From contamination to consensus

Article Abstract:

The partners involved in developing a former gasworks site by the River Kennet in Reading, Berkshire, UK had to overcome concerns from local residents regarding contamination and the profile of new residents. The housing project was costed at 3.3 million pounds sterling, and will incorporate both housing association dwellings and private apartments. The developers decided on low-density housing to ensure the right community mix for the area which was already established around the edge of the building site.
