Siesta time

Article Abstract:

Spain has experienced a construction boom since 1989. Over 2.5 million new houses were built in between 1989 and 1990. The boom is ending in 1993 as projects come to an end. Many new Madrid offices remain empty. It is expected that construction will decrease by 11% in 1993. Unemployment is over 3 million out of a population of 39 million. Twenty per cent of the unemployed are construction workers. The government has pledged to spend 6.35 million pounds sterling up to 2008 on public works. There are still some growth areas, such as hotel and shop refurbishment.

Designs on the East

Article Abstract:

British consulting engineers are setting up offices in Eastern Europe. Some expect the former communist countries to provide large amounts of work in the future as investment in offices and industry increases. Engineers like Mott MacDonald, WS Atkins, Acer and Campbell Reith Hill have either established offices in Eastern European cities or entered partnerships with local firms. They have also established a network with other Western European companies which enables resources and skills to be combined.

Pillar case

Article Abstract:

A new, 50 million pound sterling distribution centre in Nuneaton, England, is being built with pre-cast concrete columns as the frame rather than the traditional steel structure. The 52,000 sq mt warehouse is being built for RS Components and British Steel's I-section has been used for the building. A top priority is fire prevention and steel is being used to frame the four-hour fire-resistant walls.
