Regeneration game

Article Abstract:

The City Challenge scheme has been devised to focus funds for urban regeneration on specific areas. Fifty four local authorities are competing to be one of 20 areas awarded funds under the scheme. The government will judge applicants on the basis of their strategy, management, finances and partnerships with private and other local organisations. The scheme has been criticised for its competitive nature and the lack of new funding but its encouragement of a partnership and wholistic approach to regeneration is welcomed.

Presidential campaigner

Article Abstract:

Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) pres, Richard MacCormac is a vociferous campaigner for high quality public housing. He criticises the 1988 Housing Act for forcing housing authorities to buy the cheapest type of housing. This results in housing which may rapidly become obsolete, is in the wrong location and does not cater for groups such as young people. MacCormac has extensive experience of housing design and objects to the lack of detailed design and diminution of standards in the present housing market.
