Union movement

Article Abstract:

The recognition of the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU) by construction firm, Amec will disrupt the established industrial relations system of the construction industry. Under the Working Rule Agreement, wages and conditions are negotiated by employers and the unions, UCATT and TGWU at the National Joint Council for the Building Industry. Neither of these two unions is willing to admit the AEEU to the Council. However, employers anticipate more will follow Amec's lead in recognising the AEEU and the traditional arrangements will have to be changed.

Starting over

Article Abstract:

Roger Squire became chief executive of investment and development for the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) in Dec 1991 after resigning from property development company, MEPC. Squire worked at MEPC for 20 years and was development director when the recession caused the failure of many of MEPC's projects. At LDDC, Squire is responsible for acquisition, management and selling of land. He finds the public sector more bureaucratic but challenging and expects housing to revive before commercial development.
