Evening jacket

Article Abstract:

The Finnish Technical Research Centre (VTT) has constructed a prototype office building that is designed to have maximum energy efficiency. The building is insulated to high standards and uses voids in the concrete slab follrs to store cool air during the night and warm air during the day. This is used to maintain an even temperature without additional heating or cooling systems. Heat from computers and other equipment is removed at source while temperature can be controlled locally and low energy lighting is used.

CopyCAD killer

Article Abstract:

The various consultants on a building project now frequently make use of computers to share information, but this also entails the danger that designs can be copied without the original designer's knowledge or approval. People using electronic data must ensure that they understand their rights if they are to maintain control over their work. Consultants should choose their partners carefully and ensure that the issue of copyright is openly discussed before a project begins.

Net investment

Article Abstract:

Marylebone Cricket Club is currently building a new 2 million pounds sterling cricket school. This is designed to let in natural light and fresh air, unlike the present building, with walls which slide backwards and forwards. It has a particularly unusual roof, made up of a series of parallel barrel vaults and supported by extremely large, white tubular steel trusses. It has white sandwich-panel walls, while internal sails will diffuse incoming light.
