Every second counts

Article Abstract:

Barrett Steel Holdings has launched E-asybudget, an on-line cost planning service for portal-framed buildings. Quantity surveyors, designers, developers and contractors can access the company's web site to obtain prices for steelwork immediately. It is also possible for engineers to design the building on screen, in real time, using a bespoke software package. It is planned to extend the service to include cladding, as Barrett is now collaborating with a cladding supplier.

Pest practice

Article Abstract:

Construction contractors can contribute to the vermin problems of buildings even before construction is completed. Holes as small as 9 mm left in the envelope of the building provide access for rats and mice into the buildings and cladding does not always provide a barrier. Contractors can help solve the problem by practicing good housekeeping on construction sites, ensuring there are no internal or external holes larger than 5 mm and by sealing internal partitioning.
