Beverley Hughes

Article Abstract:

Construction-related policy initiatives have direct links with what the UK Treasury, Dept of Trade and Industry and Dept for Education and Employment are seeking to achieve, according to Beverley Hughes, junior minister in the Dept of the Environment, Transport and the Regions. She emphasizes that construction is a vital element of the government's plans for modernization and that it has the potential to add value in areas such as education and health. She feels that the construction industry should be able to retain and recruit employees from many different backgrounds and with many different talents.

Housing benefits

Article Abstract:

The UK government has made a commitment to release up to 5 billion pounds sterling in frozen capital receipts from the sale of council houses. This would make it possible for local authorities to refurbish existing social housing and to plan new social housing developments. This would in turn bring significant benefits for the construction industry. There will be dramatic changes in approaches to social housing procurement, and construction industry business development managers will have to begin dealing with a new client generation.
