Firm ordered to end telemarketing work

Article Abstract:

California travel agency Holiday Plus Travel has been ordered by a federal court to stop marketing its vacation packages through telemarketing and pay $20,000 to settle fraud charges. The court is also requiring Holiday Plus to post a $200,000 bond before undertaking any telemarketing efforts in the future. The company was offering travel packages for an incidental fee of $350 to $399 but did not disclose that consumers have to pay other fees and that no refunds would be made.

Article Abstract:

Discovery Rental Inc was ordered in Jun 2001 to post a $100,000 bond and to pay consumer compensation of $125,000 before using any form of telemarketing in the promotion of vacation packages. The order was issued by a judge in US District Court for the Middle District of Florida. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) accused the travel company of employing unsolicited fax advertising to sell a vacation package that bore hidden costs to consumers. The package was offered for $299 per person, according to the FTC.
