How to help roofs keep their cool

Article Abstract:

Polystyrenes carry a number of benefits in relation to the atmospheric greenhouse effect. They do not affect the ozone layer, are durable, lightweight, water resistant, energy efficient, and feature consistent R values. The use of polystyrene foam in singly-ply roofing systems has been quite successful but it cannot be employed in hot-applied built-up roofing jobs. Of even greater potential for exerting a positive effect on energy consumption is the use of extruded polystyrene in protected roof membrane systems.

ASTM improves standards for BUR

Article Abstract:

A number of new standards have been developed for asphalt-based, built up roofing (BUR) systems including a standard guide for selecting asphalt used in BUR systems. Standards for mop-down modified bitumens will likely be drafted in the near future. A draft is also being prepared to convert the existing four grades of asphalts from softening point measurements to viscosity grades, with two test procedures being evaluated and test data related to these methods being compiled at different temperatures.

Factory Mutual certification: will your company be approved?

Article Abstract:

Factory Mutual Insurance System's roofing contractors certification program may yet succeed where the National Roofing Contractors Assn (NRCA) has failed. The NRCA's certification program failed because the high turnover of personnel in the industry made it difficult to ensure that standards were always met. Because it is an insurance organization, the Factory Mutual System, on the other hand, has an incentive to develop such a program to take greater control of risk.
