Federal Disabilities Act is coming to marinas

Article Abstract:

New proposed rules under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 are specifically targeting boating facilities. The marina industry is working with the federal Access Board in the hopes of drafting a national rule that would provide required access to the physically challenged without creating undue hardships and impossible goals or regulations for marinas. Some of the issues being threshed out include the number of slips that would be reserved for the physically challenged and the technical specifications regarding the design of accessibility approaches for fixed/floating facilities and launching ramps.

Marinas stayed afloat

Article Abstract:

Marinas in the Great Lakes region of New York reported an excellent boating season despite the low water level in 1999. The low water level has been anticipated by the boating community since the spring of 1999 due to less rain and snow for the past two years. The situation was alleviated by the formation of the International Water Level Coalition that helped convinced the St. Lawrence River Board of Control to maintain a more consistent water level for the entire year.
