Gammon's gamble

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong-based construction contractor Gammon has won a contract from Danish brewer Carlsberg to build a brewhouse, utilities centre and packaging and water treatment facilities in the Songjiang Industrial Zone near Shanghai, China. Gammon believes that this contract, which must be undertaken to a fixed price of 8 million pounds sterling, will allow it to establish a presence in the market for traditional contracting in Shanghai. It has proved relatively easy to tender the various subcontract packages to local construction concerns.

Preferred bidder complains of delay after delay

Article Abstract:

Building industry businesses which have been successful at bidding for work on Private finance investment schemes are disappointed that they haven't yet received the official go-ahead from the government to start work. The quantity surveying firm Northcroft has been selected to work on nine hospital development schemes since 1994 but expects to wait until Apr. 1997 before any progress is made. It has already invested 100,000 pounds sterling in bidding and is under increasing financial pressure to earn fees from PFI projects.
